Field Season 2013: commence!

G-TREE researchers are packing up their gear and heading out to arctic and alpine field sites around the world. It has been a very late spring in many parts of the northern hemisphere, which means a slow start for many field research projects, particularly at treeline. From G-TREE participant and PhD candidate Hannah Loranger working in the French Alps, we hear that they are "digging entry ways towards [snow] blocked doors to access ... material and doing mostly indoor preparations"! So goes ecology at range margins.

We are very excited to have researchers in the field, like Hannah, contributing to this blog throughout the season. Check back regularly for updates from the field!

This is the home of the Global Treeline Range Expansion Experiment (G-TREE), a global research network.

what is a treeline?

We use the term treeline to describe the ecotone where forest transitions to non-forested ecosystems. In arctic and alpine systems, treelines occur where trees reach the limit of their climatic tolerance. Treeline ecotones are important reservoirs of biodiversity, provide wildlife habitat, and important ecosystem services such as carbon storage. Who are we?

Our research network includes university and government researchers, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduates. We hope to engage community participation at some of our long-term monitoring sites in the future. Do you want to participate or learn more? Please contact us!
